Life on a small farm or large acreage is the envy of many. Kubota has a lineup of sub-compact and compact tractors that can tackle all those projects on your to-do list at home. We’ve compiled a list of the best Kubota tractors under 40 HP for your small farm or acreage.

Benefits of Kubota compact tractors

Kubota small and mini tractors are an affordable and versatile way to manage your small farm. With a large fleet of implements, Kubota is one of the best-selling sub-compact and compact tractors. Their models range in power from 16.6 HP to 37 HP. The tractors on this list can dig trenches, mow manicured lawns or unruly brush, till gardens, and manage heavy snow. The Kubota BX Series, L Standard Series, and Grand L Series tractors can do the job without breaking the bank, giving you the power to tackle any project on your small farm.

Affordable Kubota tractors for your small farm

Kubota BX series tractors

Model: BX2380

Gross Engine HP: 21.6 HP

PTO HP: 17.7 HP

Lift Capacity: Up to 680 lbs.

Transmission Type: Hydrostatic

Mower Deck Size: Up to 60”

Cab Availability and Type: Cab optional/Heat only

According to data from the Tractor Zoom Pro database, the average listing price of a Kubota BX2380 is $15,000, from over 60 comparable listings as of June 30, 2024.

The Kubota BX Series sub-compact tractors come in four models: The BX1880 (16.6 HP), BX2380 (21.6 HP), BX23S (21.6 HP), and the BX2680 (24.8 HP). The BX Series is a great entry point for a new tractor owner looking to manage an acreage or small farm.

The Kubota BX2380 is a popular model that offers slightly more horsepower (21.6 engine HP and 17.7 HP PTO) than the smallest Kubota model, the BX1880. All Kubota BX Series tractors have a lift capacity of 680 lbs. and an optional open canopy or heated cab to keep out the elements. Though not a heavy lifter, this tractor can handle the equivalent of 12 bags of concrete or 7 cu. ft. of pea gravel. The Kubota BX2680 offers more power at 24.8 HP and 19.5 PTO HP but with the same lift capacity. The Kubota BX2680 is a better choice if your small farm has a lot of inclines or if you plan to run a lot of implements like the optional tiller, rotary cutter, or snow blade. All models fit 48”–60” under-mount mower decks.

Model: BX23S

According to data from the Tractor Zoom Pro database, the average listing price of a Kubota BX23S is $20,000, from over 30 comparable listings as of June 30, 2024.

The Kubota BX23S mini tractor stands out from the rest of the BX Series with one outstanding feature: An optional backhoe attachment. This attachment, which can be added to the back of the tractor, is a versatile tool for small farm owners looking to complete projects that require digging or trenching. It can be used for tasks such as digging holes for planting, creating drainage ditches, or even light excavation work.

Kubota L Series tractors

For small farm owners with animals to care for, timber to manage, or extensive landscaping projects, the Kubota Standard L Series might be a better fit.

Model: L2501

Gross Engine HP:  24.8 HP

PTO HP: 20.8 HP

Lift Capacity: Up to 1,431 lbs.

Transmission Type: Hydrostatic (HST) or Gearshift Transmission (GT)

Mower Deck Size: Up to 84”

Cab Availability and Type: Not available

According to data from the Tractor Zoom Pro database, the average listing price of a Kubota L2501 is $20,000, from 27 comparable listings as of June 30, 2024.

With seven models to choose from, ranging in horsepower from 24.8 HP to 48.4 HP, with 2WD/ 4WD, hydrostatic transmission, or gear shift transmission options, the Kubota L Series can be customized to fit the needs of your small farm.

The Kubota L2501 has 24.8 engine HP and 20.8 PTO HP if purchasing the Gearshift Transmission (GT) option. This model doubles the lift capacity of the BX Series, with a lift max of 1,431 lbs. or roughly 35 concrete blocks. The implement selection is impressive, and with the extra horsepower, you’ll be ready to go in no time. The options are endless with 48”–84” rotary cutters, 48”–60” grooming mowers, backhoe buckets up to 24”, bale spears, pallet forks, rear-mount blades to front-mount snow trip blade options, and more. There’s not much you can’t tackle with the Kubota L2501. If you’re new to owning an acreage or small farm and aren’t sure what projects you’ll encounter, the L series offers a lot of versatility in an easy-to-manage compact tractor. As your needs grow, you can upgrade to more implements or horsepower as each model increases in power until the series tops out at 48 HP with the Kubota L4802. The only drawback to this series is it doesn’t come with an optional dealer-installed heated cab. However, if that’s a deal breaker, an aftermarket cab may be an option.

Want more power but need to stay under 40 HP? Opt for the Kubota L3902, which has 37.2 engine HP and 32.1 PTO HP.

At an average price of $19,000, the Kubota L2501 provides ample bang for your buck.

At the top end of the power spectrum, the Kubota Grand L Series is a serious compact tractor. At just under 40 HP, you can tackle the biggest jobs and have the widest selection of implements.

Model: L3560

Gross Engine HP:  37 HP

PTO HP: 29.5 HP

Lift Capacity: Up to 1,784 lbs.

Transmission Type:

Mower Deck Size: Up to 84”

Cab Availability and Type: Open canopy or heated cab

According to data from the Tractor Zoom Pro database, the average listing price of a Kubota L3560 is $32,000, from over 24 comparable listings as of June 30, 2024.

The Kubota Grand L Series offers eight model configurations, including two limited edition options. We’ll focus on the Kubota L3560 and L3560 Limited Edition, the only models in this series under 40 HP.

The Kubota L3560 has 37 engine HP and 29.5 PTO HP. The L3560 also offers the largest lift capacity among the Kubota models in this list under 40 HP. With a lift capacity of 1,784, you can lift the equivalent of 8 cu. ft. of pea gravel or 11 cu. ft. of crushed limestone. Cab lovers rejoice! The Grand L2560 comes in either an open canopy or a dealer-installed cab option for a more comfortable work day. This tractor adds even more capabilities to the lineup, adding the options of a 72” front flail mower, stump grinder, 64” snowblower, and more. The Grand L Series is more expensive than the BX or Standard L Series, but you get much more horsepower and lifting capacity.

The Kubota L3560 is best for small farms or mid to large-sized acreage owners with big projects to tackle that require a variety of implements or horsepower-intensive activities. You’d be hard-pressed to find a job the Kubota L3560 can’t manage.

Finding value in used Kubota tractors for small farms

Kubota tractor prices can vary and depend on a multitude of factors. Consider the following when searching for the best Kubota tractor for your small farm. What projects do you plan to take on now and in the future? Also, give yourself a little breathing room; i.e., if you think you only need 20 HP, consider buying the next level up so you can elongate its lifespan by not taxing your tractor at max strength continually.

Go into the search with your eyes wide open and ask questions about its maintenance history. Has the tractor undergone any major repairs? Are the gears slipping? Did the previous owner keep up with routine maintenance, or did they fall behind?

Does the tractor come with any attachments or have enhanced features? Open canopy tractors may cost less than a tractor with a heated cab. A Kubota with an entire fleet of implements will be a big bonus for your small farm, but it might also cost more up front. When evaluating the price of used Kubota tractors, you’ll want to evaluate it with the same scrutiny you would use when purchasing a used car.

Compare dealers and auctioneers nationwide to find the best prices and look for the best Kubota tractors for sale for your small farm.
